Description: Trek from Gola South to Tiwai Island Wildlife Sanctuary, camping one night in the Gola Rainforest and staying one night in a homestay in Segbwema Village. The trek goes through primate habitat including Red Colobus Monkeys, Black & White Colobus Monkeys and Diana Monkeys. Along the way you will pass the largest tree buttress yet discovered in the park. In Segbwema Village you will visit some of the cultural attractions including Puyela, the Sacred Cave. Your community guides will finally lead you across the Moa River by dugout canoe to Tiwai Island Wildlife Sanctuary, known for its high density of primates and rare Pygmy Hippo population. You may choose to stay the night on Tiwai at the community-managed ecolodge (not included in the package price) and enjoy boat trips and guided walks around the island.
9:30 Depart from the park headquarters in Kenema for Gola South (Sileti), located 75km south of Kenama, approximately 3.5-4 hours by private car. (It is possible to depart from the Liberia border and meet your guides at the Sileti substation to start your tour. To do so, please contact the GRNP headquarters in advance for details.)
13:00 Meet your village guides and have lunch in Nemahungoima Village, a small traditional Mende village located on the park’s edge.
14:00 Trek to Bongoma Village and on to Gola Rainforest National Park, learning about medicinal plants and signs of wildlife along the way.
17:00 Set up camp along the Mase River.
19:30 Dinner around the campfire.
09:00 Walk through Gola South along a transcet trail used by researchers for monitoring wildlife in the park. Visit the park’s largest tree buttress.
13:00 Lunch on the trail or in Goboima Village.
16:00 Arrive at Segbwema Village. Check into homestay homes and participate in village activities.
19:30 Dinner with your community hosts.
09:00 Visit nearby cultural attractions such as Puyela, the Sacred Cave.
12:00 Lunch with your community hosts in the village.
13:00 Walk to the Moa River and cross by dugout canoe to Tiwai Island Wildlife Sanctuary.
16:00 Arrive at the Tiwai Island community ecolodge.
Return to Kenema or stay on Tiwai Island at the community-managed ecolodge (not included in the package price).
