‘Working at conserving this unique place is wonderful, challenging and inspiring considering the importance of this forest, the impact is has on improving local livelihoods and serving as a beacon for Sierra Leone and the wider West African region.’ Alusine Fofanah, Protected Area Manager.
‘My name is Mariama Duriya and I have been working as a Forest Guard for the Gola Rainforest National Park for almost two years now. I come from one of the 7Chiefdoms surrounding the park. I believe the work we do here to conserve the forest is very important for my people and for Sierra Leone. Many people benefit from the programme. Since my husband died in the civil war, I am left alone to support my daughter and I need to care for my elderly father. I enjoy being a Forest Guard very much, especially making camp in the forest and being with my team in the evenings. I don’t feel I need special treatment as a female guard and we all have the same challenges when we come across illegal activities. I just wish to learn more and continue working in this great forest’.
